LADBROKES anticipate that up to £30 million industry-wide will be wagered on The Open.

And the absence of Tiger Woods has had no affect on turnover, according to the Harrow-based bookmaker.

Ladbrokes spokesman, Nick Weinberg, said: “Woods’ no show means that we have a more balanced book than usual.

“The world number one always dominates the betting. But, this year, the money we’d usually expect to see for him has been more evenly dispersed amongst the field.

“Woods’ absence has removed the two extreme outcomes for the layers- either a great result or a shocker. There will still be winners and losers for us but nothing comparable to a market that includes the American.”

The firm refunded all stakes on Woods winning The Open and the USPGA championship after confirmation of his knee injury last month. - A move, which cost over £100,000.

Sergio Garcia is the 10/1 favourite for the Claret Jug with Scottish Open champion Graeme McDowell a 33/1 chance.

Weinberg added: “Mickelson is the worst result in the book at the moment, but Westwood Garcia and Montgomerie have all proved popular.”
