Rooney

Questions have been raised over England’s attack after Emile Heskey and Shaun Wright-Phillips both missed golden chances in the Three Lions’ World Cup opener against USA. Sky Bet are offering odds on who will partner Wayne Rooney in Cape Town on Friday against Algeria and go 2/1 that the Manchester United star is the lone striker.

Emile Heskey, who put in a solid performance despite squandering a chance in the 53rd minute, is 1/2 to get the nod again. Tottenham striker Peter Crouch, who made a brief appearance against the Americans, is a 6/1 chance to be Rooney’s accomplice, while his Spurs teammate Jermain Defoe is 12/1 outsider for a starting berth.

Sky Bet’s football betting spokesman Richard Browning said: “Heskey’s link-up play with Rooney looked to be one of the plus points from the game against USA and it’s likely that Capello will stick with his trusted duo for the clash with Algeria.”

The biggest doubt remains over who will start in goal against the Algerians. Despite his blunder against USA, Rob Green is being backed relentlessly to be handed a chance to redeem himself on Friday, with his odds of starting being cut to 4/6 (from 4/5) today.

England’s centre-back partnership is also under scrutiny and Sky Bet now make Jamie Carragher 1/3 to start following Ledley King’s injury. Michael Dawson is 7/2 to partner John Terry, with Matthew Upson a 6/1 chance.
