The captain of the United States Ryder Cup team Corey Pavin has said that Tiger Woods is not guaranteed an automatic place in the team to face Europe at Celtic Manor in October and Sky Bet are offering odds on him being given a wild card.

Woods has slipped out of the top ten in the US Ryder Cup qualifications after this weekend’s tournaments and is a 7/1 chance to be one of Pavin’s four picks.

Sky Bet’s golf betting spokesman Andy Thorp said: “Woods is still out nursing an injury and with uncertainty over his return date, coupled with the fact that the US does not use a world points list like Europe, there is a distinct possibility that Tiger Woods will not accumulate enough points to qualify automatically.

“If this were the case, presumably Corey Pavin would have little choice but to pick him as a wild card selection. However, given Woods’ very average Ryder Cup record and the media hype that would surround him, would Pavin really want to pick him and would Woods want to play?”
