Phil Mickelson is just a win away from becoming golf’s world number one and Sky Bet make him 14/1 to knock Tiger Woods off the top spot after this weekend’s Players Championship. The Masters champion could make number one in the rankings for the first time in his career if he wins at Sawgrass, provided that Woods finishes out of the top five.

Woods missed the cut for only the sixth time in his professional career with a second-round 79 at Quail Hollow last weekend and is 7/2 to miss the cut once again at Sawgrass.

Sky Bet’s golf betting spokesman John Rhodes said: “Phil Mickelson is in fine form coming off the back of his US Masters win and second place at Quail Hollow.

“Given that Tiger missed the cut by a country mile last week, there is every chance of Mickelson winning the Players and Woods finishing outside the top five, allowing Lefty to gain the number one spot for the first time in his career."

Mickelson was beaten to second place at Quail Hollow by Rory McIlroy, who secured his first PGA Tour win in style shooting rounds of 66 and 62. Sky Bet make the 21-year-old 20/1 third favourite behind Mickelson and Woods for victory at Sawgrass.
