A William Hill client who spotted Andy Murray's potential several years ago and backed him at 100/1 to win any tennis Major, and at 200/1 to win Wimbledon, is on the verge of winning £16,000 with Murray making the final of the Australian Open and set to start as one of the favourites to win Wimbledon.
Merfyn Griffiths of Ruthin, Denbighsire, bet £40 at 100/1 (winning £4000 if successful) on August 25, 2004 about Murray winning any of the four tennis 'Grand Slam' events - and also staked a further £60 at 200/1 (£12,000 if successful) for him to win Wimbledon - but Murray has to achieve the victories this year, or the bet will expire.
'Mr Griffiths wrote to us in 2004 explaining that he had heard of a promising teenage tennis player called Andrew Murray and asking for odds about the lad winning a Grand Slam event, and also specifically winning Wimbledon. He asked for his bets to run until the year 2010, so Andy has to oblige this year for him to collect. He stands to win a potential £16,000 in all' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.
