Sky Bet have cut Nigel Worthington to 2/1 (from 4/1) to be next manager of Sheffield Wednesday after the Northern Ireland boss declared his interest in the vacancy.

After Brian Laws quit on Sunday, Sky Bet installed Worthington, who served Sheffield Wednesday as a player for 11 years, as 4/1 second favourite and he has since come in for substantial support to take over at Hillsborough. Worthington’s contract with Northern Ireland expires at the end of the year and he is yet to sign a new deal.

Sky Bet’s football betting spokeswoman Helen Jacob said: “The vacancy has arisen at a convenient time for Worthington and his background with the club and interest in the job makes him a strong frontrunner now for the Hillsborough hot seat.”

Academy boss Sean McAuley has taken temporary charge following Laws' departure and is Sky Bet’s 5/1 second favourite to take the reins on a permanent basis.

Steve Cotterill (8/1 from 14/1) and Darren Ferguson (12/1) are also believed to be in the frame and have been popular punts for the Owls hot seat since yesterday.

The Owls slipped into the bottom three following their defeat at Leicester and have not won since October 17th. Sky Bet make them 7/4 to be relegated.
