Leading bookmaker, Coral, today cut the odds on the Conservative Party winning the next General Election to 1-14 from 1-10, the shortest price ever offered on an Opposition Party before the start of an Election campaign in the history of political betting.
Gordon Brown's Labour Party are now 13-2 to hang on to power at the next Election with the Liberal Democrats 50-1 outsiders.
"Bookmakers have been taking bets on General Elections for over 40 years but have never offered such a short price on the Opposition Party winning power so far in advance of the likely polling date", said Simon Clare, Coral Spokesman.
"Whilst there is no such thing as a certainty in betting, I can't remember the last time a 1-14 shot got beaten in any sport or horse race", said Clare.
"What is even more worrying for Labour is that punters are still willing to back the Tories even at the prohibitive odds", added Clare.
Coral is offering 2-1 against Gordon Brown taking part in a live televised political debate with David Cameron during the next General Election campaign.
A May 2010 General Election is the 1-4 favourite ahead of a June polling date at 7-1. Alan Johnson is the 5-4 favourite to replace Gordon Brown as Labour Party leader.
