The International Cricket Council has confirmed it is investigating claims of suspicious bookmaking activity linked to the Ashes series.

The ICC has launched its probe following claims that an unnamed Australian player was approached after last month's second Test against England by a person known to have links to illegal bookmaking.

The player is reported to have alerted the Australian authorities immediately and the ICC's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) was alerted.

The series is currently level at 1-1 ahead of a decider at The Oval which begins on Thursday.

"I can confirm the ACSU has received a report from Australia team management," said an ICC spokesperson.

"The anti-corruption and security unit of the ICC has developed and implemented a fairly comprehensive education programme for all international players and every single international player has undergone that education and is aware of his responsibilities to report any suspicious activity that he feels he may have been subject to.

"It seems in this case that education has hit home and we have received a report that the ACSU will now investigate."
