Sky Bet make Kim Clijsters a 20/1 chance to win the US Open after the former world number one made a stunning comeback on Monday, beating Marion Bartoli in straight sets at the Cincinnati Open. The 26-year-old Belgian will now take on Patty Schnyder in the second round and is 4/11 to beat the Swiss (2/1).
Clijsters’ impressive victory over world number 13 Bartoli, who last week defeated Venus Williams on her way to winning the Stanford Classic, marked Clijsters’ first competitive match in two years. Sky Bet make Clijsters a 6/4 chance to beat Venus Williams in their next meeting and 2/1 to beat Serena Williams.
Sky Bet’s tennis compiler, Chris Kennedy said: “Clijsters’ excellent form in recent exhibition matches suggested that she would be competitive on her return to the Tour but a straight-sets win over the in-form Bartoli puts her right in the mix for the US Open and outside of the Williams sisters, she could be as dangerous as anyone.”
Clijsters won the US Open in 2005 and is 7/4 to make the semi-finals this year and 6/1 to reach the final. Before retiring in May 2007, Clijsters had won 34 WTA singles titles and is a 7/4 chance to win another Grand Slam singles title in her career.
