KUALA LUMPUR: Police have been taking action against e-gambling and have raided 2,900 premises from Jan to May, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said.

Of those involved in e-gambling in 2,600 premises were arrested, he said.

“We view this seriously because if its not controlled now, it may lead to other crime and may increase the rate of crime,” he said at the Parliament lobby on Wednesday.

“When a person gambles, he will be in debt and he may turn to an Ah Long, or rob, or be involved in snatch thefts to fulfill his addiction,” he said adding that they have to look at the issue comprehensively.

Hishammuddin said he would work closely with the Criminal Investigation Department to focus on the Federal Territory and Selangor for now.

“We are on top of it. We will announce from time to time on the arrests made,” he said.

On Tuesday, The Star front paged a report on illegal mini-casinos through the use of computers which have mushroomed all over the Klang Valley recently following the introduction of new software linked to syndicates in Hong Kong and the Philippines.

On death threats on N. Gobalakrishnan (PKR Padang Serai),Hishammuddin said Gobalakrishnan himself had informed him about the incident earlier in the day.

“I assured him that I would look into it and I will take action to ensure that he is safe, and we have the expertise to investigate,” he said.
