Bwin not in new sponsorship talks with Real Madrid, boss says
Bwin co-chief executive Manfred Bodner has denied rumours that the company had already entered negotiations to extend its sponsorship deal with Spanish football giants Real Madrid.
Bodner said: “The Real Madrid sponsorship is one of the best communication strategies we have carried out. Even if the sporting results weren’t as good as hoped this season, we believe Real will return to winning ways very soon.”
As reported on EGRmagazine.com, the Austrian bookmaker began its three-year sponsorship agreement with Real Madrid in 2007. The deal is believed to be worth up to €45m (£30m) (more). The contract will expire next year in tandem with Bwin’s deal with its four-year shirt sponsorship deal with Italian football giants AC Milan, which began in 2006 and is believed to be worth up to £60m.
Bwin’s Real Madrid sponsorship is motivated in large part by Spain’s move to regulate egaming. After years of different approaches to online gambling among individual regions, Spain is discussing regulating online gaming at federal level, with many observers predicting it could happen as early as this year (more).
It will also be motivated by its tie-up in Spain with Betbull, Betbull Bwin Espana, which opened its first betting outlets in February (more). Betbull Bwin Espana opened its first third-party premises in February.
