Police are objecting to holding a poker tournament slated for the end of the month, arguing it is a forbidden game that attracts criminal elements.

At the beginning of the month the Israel Poker Association petitioned the High Court of Justice to enable a Texas Hold'em tournament.

The IPA maintains the game is legal as it demands more skill and understanding of its players than luck.

The State Prosecutor's representative, however, responded yesterday that poker is a forbidden game according to the penal code. Since it involves large sums of money it often causes disputes among criminals that at times lead to serious acts of violence, the prosecution said.
