Accrington Stanley players in betting probe to discover fate
THE five players charged with betting against Accrington Stanley are expected to discover their fate at the end of next month – and the outcome could have a major impact on the club’s future.
Peter Cavanagh and Robbie Williams – as well as former Reds David Mannix, Jay Harris and Andy Mangan – have all been charged by the FA with betting against Stanley ahead of a 2-0 defeat to Bury in May 2008.
A sixth player, Leighton McGivern, has been charged with failing to provide information for the investigation.
All of the players have formally denied the charges and it is now thought that their FA hearings will take place at the end of July.
If found guilty they could face lengthy bans, while Cavanagh and Williams – due to be out of contract on June 30 – would have no future with Stanley.
And the outcome could have a wider impact on cash- strapped Stanley, with a potential stadium sponsor still waiting in the wings.
The Reds lost current sponsors Fraser Eagle when the company went into administration in March but a holiday company was ready to get involved before the betting scandal put the deal on hold.
“They’ve said they will look at it after the betting hearing, which I think is going to be at the end of July now,” said Stanley general manager Dave O’Neill.
