DENNIS Wise is the 9/4 favourite to be the next permanent manager of Newcastle after Ladbrokes began betting on who'll succeed Kevin Keegan on Tyneside.

The bookies were forced to suspend betting on Keegan becoming the first Sack Race casualty early on Tuesday morning after a series of big bets.

And Ladbrokes already make Wise the clear favourite ahead of Toon hero Alan Shearer who is 9/2 to take charge at St James's Park.

David Williams of Ladbrokes said: "Wise seems to have escaped unscathed from the Keegan fiasco but the giant figure of Shearer will once again make it a murky managerial market.

"Keegan was a 10/1 chance in the Summer to be the first casualty but the past 48 hours saw his odds plummet. By mid-morning alarm bells were ringing at Head Office and the so-called Messiah was simply in a mess."

Harry Redknapp is 7/1 to take over at Newcastle and Steve Bruce is a 10/1 chance. Foreign coaches Frank Rijkaard, Gerard Houllier and Roberto Mancini are all 14/1 chances.
