Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and other similar platforms are already extremely important in developing a company’s social image and are still ever increasing in significance. Companies we deal with are able to achieve a greater level of exposure to audiences they were unable to reach before. This has become even more prominent with Facebook’s recent relaxing of advertising for gaming companies.
What I want to touch upon is a personal brand for individuals, through the use of social media. If you are applying for a marketing role with any kind of exposure to social media, it is important that you have a personal brand set in place.
I have had a case in the past whereby a candidate was not offered the job just because they didn’t have their own twitter account. That is how important this new social age has become to some companies now.
Everyone has a Facebook account, but…….
Make sure you have set up a twitter account and relate it to your industry. Post relevant news, and share with your colleagues/industry. This is particularly important for jobs such as SEO Manager/Exec, Campaign related roles, but Twitter is inherent across most types of marketing nowadays.
Start writing a blog about your interests in marketing/your industry. This is particularly important for roles such as Content Exec/Manager, and again Campaign related roles. Don’t blog once a month either. I recently placed a Content Manager whose blog contains 80 posts a month. Granted he has contributors, but his blog gets 100,000 unique hits a month. Figures like this will certainly set your CV apart.
Add a ‘social media’ section to the bottom of your CV, and companies will definitely take notice.
