Betting Jobs, Online Betting Jobs and Sports Betting Jobs at Hyperion
Many industry veterans in the betting industry are still used to requesting a fraction of 100/14 about a seven to one shot: “£2000 to £280, that's a bet”! Hyperion Gaming’s staff have experience of punting (and working) on-course, and can also liaise fluently with the current generation who only know “sevens” as 8.0 on their Betfair screen. Some of Hyperion Gaming’s staff can also tell you that 7/1 is known in tic-tac slang as a “Nevis”, and that the price's race track tic-tac symbol is a tap of the shoulder and covering of the nose in a smooth action, but then there are always some who take it too far!
Away from the glitz of an electronically tinkling roulette ball settling on a computer generated red 18, many things about the gaming industry remain the same as in the days when Mick the Miller dominated greyhound racing. In those days betting away from the course was restricted to credit only bookmakers and illegal “bookie's runners” on the street corner. In the 1930's a certain horse by the name of Hyperion swept all before him, and the race track market was very much the same then until the late 1990's when pitch reforms ushered in a new keener and more competitive market on course. Around the same time chalk boards were retired in favour of electronic screens and printed bet receipts.
Off-Course, the unprecedented seismic event was the legalisation of off-course betting in 1961, and almost overnight betting shops set up, and soon the more successful operators built vast estates. Over the years, the big players established such a market share that they are widely known as the “Big three” - Corals, William Hill and Ladbrokes. These firms and others began to establish vast telephone betting operations. The major betting industry players would ebb and flow, with some well known names like Mecca and Stanley selling their retail share, and other new firms like PaddyPower establishing themselves as forces. The 2001 abolition of betting tax on punters wagers meant that the betting industry’s revenue was further boosted. This also meant that betting shop settlers became less reliant on expert knowledge of the number 9 times table, though introduction of EPOS settlement systems made mental arithmetic less of a prerequisite for betting shop work.
In the last ten years the industry has embraced online business, not least spear headed by a new breed of player with Betfair and Flutter initially fighting out supremacy to be “numero uno” in P2P betting exchanges. Flutter eventually sold out to Betfair, and the betting exchange market now also sees significant market share being held by Betdaq, WBX and others. Since the mid nineties spread betting firms such as Sporting Index, IG Index, and Spreadex have all established market shares. Other pioneering firms like Stan James and Bet365 have ushered in an age of “in-running” betting on almost every event. Today's odds compliers are more creative than ever, and the range of markets that online sportsbooks offer are light years away from the limited range of only fifteen years ago.
At Hyperion Gaming our consultants have predominantly worked as employees for leading gaming firms. We know that “five to four” isn't a train time, a “spread” isn't something that is put on a sandwich, and an “over-round” doesn't happen during the happy hour in the local pub.
This level of knowledge in the “betting industry” as with other sides of iGaming has seen Hyperion Gaming retained to build several trading teams of a dozen plus traders for clients within the specialisation of sports spread betting, Asian handicap, and fixed odds.
